Description
“The Knot” is an inflatable sculpture inspired by the double knot—an element deeply rooted in
the maritime and textile industries of Old Dubai. Positioned against the backdrop of Al
Shindagha’s traditional architecture and along the bustling creek promenade, the installation is
a bold and playful contrast to the historic surroundings.
The knot's form draws from two interwoven narratives that have shaped the identity of the
area—[1] fishing and sailing, where knots play a crucial role in nets, sails, and rigging, and [2] the
textile and weaving industries, where knots anchor craftsmanship. This duality is formalized in
the double knot’s structure.
The sculpture carries a sense of humor and playfulness, inflating the mundane into the
monumental. Its exaggerated, cartoonish form feels lighthearted, accessible, and
surreal—capturing Dubai’s audacious spirit in reimagining itself. The knot, typically small and
hidden, is scaled up to occupy the public square, offering visitors a moment of surprise and
delight.
The installation’s oversized, bright yellow form introduces an element of contemporary liveliness
to the site, embodying a sense of place-making. As visitors walk around or under the structure,
they engage with Dubai’s heritage through a modern lens—merging tradition with innovation.
The inflatable’s softness and vibrant color juxtapose the solid, earthy tones of the surrounding
buildings, emphasizing the delicate balance between preservation and progress.
It invites interaction, encouraging visitors to walk around or under it, engaging with the piece
beyond a landmark within the public space. A fun sense of discovery.
